Carol Kirkwood has brought new standards to Laramie High School throughout her career. In 1996, she was the first teacher at her school to teach an Advanced Placement course. She continued to teacher other advanced courses as well, including French V. Today, Kirkwood still believes that teachers work best when they have extensive knowledge of their subject area. She herself graduated summa cum laude from Colorado State University and stays on top of the latest trends in her own field. For example, she has studied and traveled extensively throughout France to brush up on her language skills. She also involves herself with communities closer to home: community service is a big part of Kirkwood's life outside of education. After over thirty years of teaching, Kirkwood is still interested in "giving back" to the field of education. In 2006, she got that opportunity when she was named Wyoming Teacher of the Year.
