Principal Graciela Marquez knows first-hand about the challenges her students face. Having been an English Language Leaner (ELL) student herself, Marquez relates to students at her school and provides them with opportunities she herself didn't have. For example, she helps students adopt new languages through the transitional bilingual school model. Thanks to her hand in programs like the Rural Education Initiative, she has helped turn Anthony Elementary School around by improving academics and bolstering community involvement. Under her leadership, student proficiency at her school has more than doubled. Marquez is never satisfied, however, and the teachers she leads notice that she is constantly raising the bar for students at Anthony. Marquez herself, however, has certainly reached the national standard for outstanding educators. In 2006, she was awarded a prestigious Milken Educators Award for her exceptional leadership. At the awards ceremony, students showed how grateful they are for Marquez' expertise by dancing in her honor.
