what's interesting about John?

John Coffey joined the ranks of the legal profession after a high flying career with the United States Navy. Coffey was a P-3C Orion patrol plane mission commander and the personal military aide to then Vice President George H.W. Bush. After leaving active duty to pursue his legal career, Coffey continued to serve in the Navy Reserve, where he commanded a P-3C squadron and the Reserve component of the Enterprise carrier battle group staff, and served for four years as a Captain in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon. As an attorney Coffey served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, conducting fraud investigations, many of which he tried to verdict. He joined Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann in 1998, and has had the opportunity to serve as lead trial attorney in two high profile fraud cases handled by the firm. The first being the prosecution of the WorldCom securities class action, that yielded a record-breaking recovery of over $6.15 billion for defrauded investors. The second being a trial from the collapse of the Baptist Foundation of Arizona, the largest non-profit bankruptcy in U.S. history, where he obtained a $217 million settlement, one of the largest ever paid by an accounting firm. Coffey's work has gotten him profiled in The Wall Street Journal, The American Lawyer, and BusinessWeek, and featured on "The Wall Street Fix" on PBS' Frontline. He is a member of the Federal Bar Council, the American Bar Association, and the Public Justice Foundation. Mr. Coffey is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Inc., in Westchester County, N.Y.
