As soon as she graduated from high school, Margaret Williams knew she wanted to spend her life helping others. She didn't realize, however, that her goal would eventually lead her back to the classroom. When she began college, she thought she would become a lawyer. Today, however, students at University City High School are glad she chose a different path. There, this outstanding educator serves as the social studies department chair and inspires students with her high standards and innovative teaching methods. She teaches a wide variety of courses, including African-American Experience, U.S. Government and Honors U.S. Government. No matter what she is teaching, Williams' lessons come to life through hands-on demonstrations and projects that are always tied to the real world. Students in Williams' classroom build model slave ships and learn African dances, for example, thanks to their creative teacher. In 2008, Williams was named Teacher of the Year by the state of Missouri. For this excellent instructor, the honor was more than well deserved.
