My favorite kind of teacher when I was a child was the kind of teacher you could tell loved the subject they were teaching, because that is the kind of teacher that places the passion for learning within a child's heart. I remember one of my math teachers for the great stories he would tell about math, and his passion reminds me of the passion that Pascale Creek Pinner has for her subject and her students. She is the kind of science teacher I would have wanted in school. She's well known for the creative teaching strategies that she uses in her classroom to inspire her students to want to learn, which include song, dance and the arts, and is adaptive to her students. She also includes service learning in her curriculum. Pinner began teaching at Hilo Intermediate school in 1988, and earned her certification by the National Board of Teaching Standards in Early Adolescent Science in 2002, a type of certification that only 202 other teachers in the state of Hawaii share. In 2004 she was given a Presidential Award for Excellence in teaching math and science. In 2008 she was chosen as the State of Hawaii Teacher of the Year.
