Kassie Siegel has the unique distinction of having testified on behalf of polar bears before the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. The Center for Biological Diversity filed the polar bear petition on Feb. 16, 2005 and on May 14, 2008, the polar bear was listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act. AsSenior Counsel and Climate Law Institute Director, Ms. Siegel wages innovative legal and public-pressure campaigns to limit global warming pollution and prevent it from driving species extinct. She played a leading role in the case that culminated in the decision by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejecting the federal fuel economy standards for light trucks and sport utility vehicles as incomplete and inadequate. It’s easy to figure out how Kassie’s passion evolved, because before she ever began her legal career she was a natural-history guide leading wilderness trips in Alaska. California Lawyer Magazine honored Ms Siegel with the Attorney of the Year Award recognizing 34 lawyers who made a profound impact on the law in 2007.
