Chris Hoofnagle was frustrated. As a lawyer on Capitol Hill fighting for consumer protection, he kept seeing the same arguments being used over and over by industry lobbyists intent on spreading confusion and frustrating reform. He collected these tactics in the "Denialist's Deck of Cards." These techniques have been successful for spreading doubt about everything from the link to smoking and lung cancer to human beings causing global warming. (In fact, many of the same people who denied the link between smoking and lung cancer have denied the link between carbon emissions and global warming.) Hoofnagle runs the Denialism Blog with his brother Mark. He also directs the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology's information privacy programs and is a senior fellow to the Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic. He specializes in information privacy law.
