Mary Woitas is committed to student learning and firmly believes that all of her students can and do learn. This is despite the fact that she works with special needs students ages 3-7, many of whom have severe disabilities. Woitas teaches at Columbus West School in Cicero, Illinois. There, her dedication to her students has helped them grow and learn, often beyond their own expectations. She talks and sings to her students throughout the day despite the fact that some of her students cannot hear or talk back to her. Her high standards and positive attitude lead her to give age-typical math and alphabet lessons to her students. Woitas' outstanding teaching has been called an "impressive ability to read each student's rhythm." In 2008, this outstanding educator won a prestigious Kohl/McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award. The awards are given annually to early childhood educators in the Chicago area. Woitas' patience and nurturing style make her more than deserving of this high honor.
