One of the things that I love about living in Washington is the plethora of unique names-- Kitsap, Wenatchee, Kennewick, and most recently discovered, Ilwaco. I have no idea what Ilwaco means, but it came to my attention because of Jeff Lewis, a man remarkable for several reasons. Firstly, Jeff is a male teacher in an educational world where probably 80% of teachers are female. Secondly, Jeff won the Regional Teacher of the Year award after only 13 years of teaching-- most teachers take 20-30 years to earn such an honor. Thirdly, Jeff takes a unique, time-consuming but ultimately worthwhile, approach to ensuring that every student is instructed at the appropriate difficulty level. Fourthly, Jeff's talents and tactics have gotten results-- his classroom passing rate for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning is through the roof. Even more exciting, Jeff is still young and his students and peers have plenty of years of Jeff's classroom excellence to look forward to.
