Childhood, education, and growing up is simply a journey of reaching, meeting, and surpassing benchmarks. At Ogden Preparatory Academy, Emma Clisante teaches first grade to a mixed classroom of English and Spanish speaking students. As a citizenship of the Dominican Republic, Clisante arrived in the U.S. in 2003 to teach at the preparatory academy, and along the way, her students have had the opportunity to watch their teach immigrate and then become a U.S. citizen. Capitalizing on her own her unique background, she has been able to blend cultural history and heritage, which is especially relevant considering a portion of her students hold English Language Learners status. In 2004 after being at the academy only one year, she was named the Nebraska 2004 American Star of Teaching by the U.S. Department of Education.
