Since Hollywood stars get a lot of press for being eco-friendly, it is somewhat appropriate that Bob Hope Airport in Burbank (aptly named for my purposes as well) has received the honor of being the only LEED-platinum certified aircraft hangar in the world. Bob Hope Airport is known for being the LA-area airport most popular with celebrities, so the greenies among them must be very pleased with their new launching pad. Film producer Steve Bing (Beowulf, The Polar Express
) funded the project, enlisting the services of eco-friendly contractor Shangri-La Construction, a company whose mission is firmly planted in economical green building practices. Their work at Bob Hope Airport, called Hangar 25, boasts a plug-in jet system, and solar paneling design to produce 110% of the energy necessary for operation. There is still the problem, of course, of the fuel-powered aircraft housed in the hangar, but at least the building itself won't tax the natural environment. Aside from Hangar 25, Shangri-La Construction has quite a few other prominent LA-area projects under its tool belt, primarily eco-friendly office buildings and factories.
