Christian Lander may be the whitest man in America. Lander created the blogging phenomenon “Stuff White People Like”, a satire of upper-middle-class white liberals that's stirred some controversy since its inception. Each entry on the blog simply makes some comic observations about another thing White People Like: Coffee, IKEA, the films of Wes Anderson, Knowing What's Best For Poor People. Lander was working as an ad copywriter when he struck up a conversation with a friend about the HBO's “The Wire.” One of them speculated that not enough white people were watching the show: what were they doing instead? Answer: attending local theater, getting divorces, attending therapy sessions, etc...and soon an internet mini-phenomenon was born. (Later, “The Wire” was a Stuff White People Like Entry). The blog became popular enough for Random House to release a book version, also written by Mr. Lander. A few people have accused him of racism, but Lander admits that most of the entries are inspired by his own personal tastes. For a jokey blog built around a single premise, Stuff White People Like is a surprisingly funny read, and Lander is gifted at taking observations and turning them into a field guide to upper- and middle-class Caucasia (and sometimes the user comments section is just as humorous.) If you've been dragged to one too many '80s nights at your local pub, know someone with an Apple products fetish, or have ever been caught reading the Sunday New York Times and listening to NPR simultaneously, the blog and its companion book will definitely be your cup of all-natural, fair-trade, 100% organic tea.
