THC vapes and lung illnesses
Any thoughts on the recent news about vapes
And deaths sweeping USA? 6 deaths so far with about
400 serious cases mainly involving vapes ?

Sorry, but there's a fair amount of misinformation in this topic. Water vapour in the lungs is not particularly dangerous... otherwise we couldn't all take hot showers, baths... saunas etc. That's not the problem (and inhaling smoke into the lungs is undeniably more hazardous). The deaths related to vaping have been linked to a form of Vitamin E added to the vape mixture. This is not standard practise for nicotine liquids, or cannabis liquids. It's only appeared on the black market, for unscrupulous sellers bulking out THC vapes.

The problem with this is that this chemical behaves like an oil, therefore congesting the lungs and leading to lipid pneumonia. But let's not pretend this is a widespread problem with vaping - given the millions of vapers out there, the current cases constitute an absolutely tiny proportion. People are NOT dying fast from vaping. Cases of respiratory disease are falling, thanks to fewer people smoking.

There is no significant damage done from pure THC, nicotine or water vapours being inhaled into/exhaled from your lungs. Far less than noxious smoke containing tar and tens of thousands of other compounds. The current drama has just been stirred up to give Trump something to campaign on. Vaping is a huge boon to public health, as the majority of independent medical experts would attest to.

It's just a reminder that people shouldn't vape (smoke or eat!) anything if they're not completely sure what's in it. You're only going to run into trouble if you end up vaping something unvapeable. I vape e cigs and cannabis buds, hash and concentrates. But I don't buy those pre-filled THC carts, I buy empty CCells and fill them with pure distillate I've sourced myself. I'd try them from licensed dispensaries in legal states, but I'd never risk buying one from the kid on the corner...

But also remember you are going by what you have read, and I was going by what I read. So to say there is misinformation here, and to down vote, i don't get it, because you are going by news sources to. How do you know your info is correct? As your news sources could be incorrect and so could the news over here. This is why it's great to get everyones thoughts, if you choose to not believe medical 'facts' about water in lungs, that's upto you. This is why I believe nothing, until I have researched well or had personal experience. I hope that vapes are not dangerous, for all those who smoke them, but vaping is relatively new, so not many long term studies.

And water in lungs is a real thing, if you believe medical people, what I read, is ''It happens if water gets into the lungs. There, it can irritate the lungs' lining and fluid can build up, causing a condition called pulmonary edema. You breathe in (inhale) food, liquids, vomit, or fluids from the mouth into your lungs (aspiration pneumonia)'' I can only go by medical 'facts' I have read and have tried to understand, and from personal experience. You read that it is the vitamin E that's the problem, we read over here that the hot water vapour is also a problem along with oil from the cannabis or cart mixture. With hundreds of chemicals in some carts, I don't believe for a second it's just the vitamin e that's the problem. clear accurate labelling of carts will help people make more informed choices, and hopefully people will become better at detecting black market produce.

At the end of the day anything in the world can be dangerous, a peanut can kill you, they say a glass of red wine is good for you, then they say it's bad, the whole point is to confuse the public. So the best I can do is read labels, buy from good sources, and listen to my body, if I am coughing my lungs up, then something not right with what I am smoking.

Great comment, islenator, just goes to show you how the news stories differ in their information, here in UK we are reading one thing, and in US they are reading other info. But as I said I read I learn, but I only listen to my body, myself and my heart. That is my only reliable source that I trust. If something doesn't make me cough and goes down smooth, then I will smoke it. But if I ever cough again and stop breathing on something different I am trying, then I will quit that immediately. I see so many smoke sessions on youtube and weedtube where the people are coughing their lungs up every inhale of a bong, and they carry on and on. It pains me to watch.

Also hot showers and baths do not contain bad chemicals or oils, so maybe what I read about vapour in lungs, meant vapour mixed with oil and chemicals, complicating pneomonia as I wrote yesterday below. It's so interesting to see the information other people have been fed all over the world. I don't believe anything anymore, just go with my instincts :) Because the more I learn, the more I don't know, and the more I think I am right, the more I realise I am wrong and I have been lied to about everything threw education and the media

Indeed, I appreciate why vaping's viewed with suspicion by non-smokers/vapers, there's been a lot of deliberate misleading of the public in the past. The big difference in how the US and UK present it, I think, stems from the fact we have free healthcare in the UK. Public Health England has maintained a positive outlook on vaping as it knows it's reducing smoking-related illnesses, with less cost to the NHS.

In the US, healthcare policy doesn't work on the same assumptions - more about driving profit than cutting costs. Plus the way lobbying works there has given the tobacco industry more of a say. Much of the scaremongering and push for vaping restriction up until this point was probably, in part, due to Big Tobacco. They saw their profits from tobacco sales decimated by vaping's increase, and needed to slow down that market so that they could catch up.

But now, the tobacco giants are all looking to vaping as a way to reclaim their profits. As bigger companies, they've been slower to adapt than the fast moving vape industry, but applying pressure has bought them time to catch up on R&D, to the point they're now trying to take over the vape industry.

The fact that these health issues cropped up (likely due to black market THC vapes) has probably caught them off guard too. I don't think the tobacco companies want to see flavours banned, or any further restrictions to vaping as it is in the US, as they're just about to start seeing returns in that sector. I think it's just an unfortunate coincidence, being exploited by Trump for political gain.

I've actually been quite impressed by the UK response to what's going on. There have been a lot of public statements trying to reassure vapers that what they're doing is a much better idea than smoking; clearing up some of the myths around vaping. Smoking organic matter (of any sort) will result in a cocktail of thousands of dangerous chemicals. Vaping an e-liquid with safe ingredients results in far fewer.

Thanks for this, it's great when someone that is well researched in a topic is willing to take the time to add to the conversation, as you can imagine there are not many people in real life that are willing to talk about deeper issues, so I love seeing it pop up here. Yeah I said in a post below that I think the medical lot have probably a win over corperate for the first time in a long time, here in the UK atleast, as long as we as consumers know every ingredient in something that we either eat, drink or smoke, and its clearly declared on the item, then we can take responsibility for our own health and decisions. But sadly lack of labeling and as you say the dodgy black market stuff have really put a spanner in the works for all the legit vapes.

Hi Mystic, I think either these stats are true, or it's fake news from the tobacco industry trying to put people off vaping so that they go back to cigarettes. Apparently only 2 out of 8 of the cases, I read about contained THC in the vape, the others were vaping tobacco or flavours. So before I believe any stats, I like to research further, you really need to read the actual research papers for the tests they did, if they did them that is, or are their stats just estimates.

And again the majority are tobacco products not THC, however both still produce water vapour in the lungs which is dangerous. I think the biggest risk to vaping is how the lungs can fill up with water vapour, and not if they contain tobacco or thc or cbd etc ! Also all the unknown chemicals in vapes, there are hundreds. You never ever want a drop of water in your lungs, can lead to pneumonia and death. I only stick to flower/buds because I want to be as close to nature as I can get with the least bit of human interference.

I did';t know that about water and lungs, its amazing how they could be protected from water in the body.

Think about it this way, you know when you have inhaled your coffee to quickly, and a few drops go down the wrong pipe, and you cough violently? That is water getting into your wind pipe and down into your lungs, so to save your life, your lungs make you cough until your eyes bulge, to get as much air in as possible and to try to expel the water droplets. Smoking flower however is pure smoke, no water or oil going to your lungs. Also you inhale oil particles with vape to which can cause inflammation and fat buildup associated with the pneumonia.

good solid info, thanks, and I agree we cant believe everything although those Tabaco and flavour vapes are obviously dangerous, just take a puff and feel the discomfort in the lungs. good for short term to quit Tabaco but people use them permanently. whats your opinion on a dry herb vapouriser? and your thoughts on the genuine distillate carts like 90% pure distillate?

Hi X, yeah anything that repeatedly makes you cough violently is your body telling you it's poison and to get it out of your lungs now and to stay away from it. I tried a flower one time and I coughed so bad that I stopped breathing and thought, oh no this is the end. Then I took a breath and violently vomited. The flower obviously must have had some poisonous chemical fertilizers in it ! So even flower you have to be careful of. I only smoke the same strain now from reliable sources, if it's smooth to smoke and does not make me cough it's a winner.

I don't think long term or short term matters. You could vape just one puff just one time, and the water or oil goes down the wrong pipe! I read in a UK paper today that the ban on e-cigs is forcing people that are trying to quit tobacco back to buying cigarettes. What a coincidence as I said that yesterday before I read this article that maybe it's all fake news from tobacco companies. And today I read that !

I don't know anything about the herb vape or distillate 90%. All I can say again is listen to your body, it is trying to save your life. If the herb vape or distillate contain water or oil, or chemicals and if the means of delivery into your lungs consists of water vapour, then you run the risk of a coughing fit at any point once these compounds have built up in the lungs. So smoke only the best thing you can that is smooth and doesn't make you cough, otherwise if it all makes you cough, then edibles maybe next option.

im same only dry vape and pure distillate carts now since quiting Tabaco years ago. lighting up pure joints is always enjoyable with top shelf buds. I really enjoy dabbing and recently bought a rosin press and is now my favourite way to consume cannabis.

I think you can put dabs into a joint and it's good. So maybe with the dry herb vape it would work the same? How does the dry vape work, do you get a nice hit as you do with a joint?

The truth is a hit from a joint can't be beat, but I only have a medium price vape £100,im sure the expensive vapourisers are much better, but what I have is good for me as I only puff late before bed, on the weekends I always have an edible as it lasts so long, and I love it

this is an interesting topic... British American Tobacco only last night confirmed they are shedding 2000 jobs in the UK as they move away from tobacco and start to focus on Vape.

hmmmm? maybe the medical people are right then? people are dying fast from vaping. And the companies were all getting ready to switch to vapes, BUT now this medical evidence is out it craps on their plans. So maybe for once medical doctors got one over on corperate and are actually trying to help the people?

But again ONLY listen to your body and your heart. Not anyone or anything outside of you. Read the facts, read the research, but listen to your body signals and your heart. If something feels 'off' it is off, if something upsets your body, stay away from it. Or don't and carry on :) it's our choice.
