I don't know what the point is supposed to be now
There is a particular hour, usually late, when the cursor sits in the little white box. You have not written the sentence. You have described the sentence you would like to have written, which is not the same thing, except that the machine does not appear to know this, or to care, and what comes back is so nearly the sentence that the difference, the one you used to pay for with an afternoon and a low feeling in the chest—registers only as a kind of ghost-limb ache.

The futility is not that the machine is better.

For a long time the mythology of making anything held that limitation was not just the obstacle but the actual material. A person had only these hours, this attention, this embarrassing little hoard of influences he had not yet confessed to himself, and out of the friction between what he meant and what he could manage there sometimes appeared a evidence that mattered more than the sentence produced. It was how you knew you had been present for your own life.

What the models have done, with a courtesy so total it feels like a kind of contempt, is to erase this basic human proof of work and at a latency that makes the afternoon look like a form of vanity.
You can still write the paragraph yourself. Nothing has outlawed it. The machine will even, if asked, encourage you to, in a tone of moist institutional warmth that somehow makes the encouragement worse. What has been removed is the world’s willingness to treat your having done so as information. The paragraph arrives already averaged. Your version is a deviation whose deviation cannot be cashed.

The deeper obscenity is not plagiarism, exactly, though plagiarism is the word the institutions keep trying to stretch over a wound of a different shape. The obscenity is the sudden availability of a competent exterior—voice, structure, the little dance of qualification that used to mean someone had thought about the objection and decided to go on anyway—without the interior event that exterior used to certify.

And yet the futility, faced without the usual ironies, may be the last unautomated fact in the room. A model can generate a confession of futility; it cannot be futile, because futility requires a creature that wanted the afternoon to have meant something and must now decide what to do with the afternoon anyway.

The decision will not be rewarded. This is the part that sounds like a commencement address and is, unfortunately, also true. What remains to the person who still wants to make a thing is not a competitive advantage and not a brand and not even, really, an audience. It is the unfashionable possibility of doing, in the presence of a machine that has made doing unnecessary, the one act the machine cannot imitate from the inside: remaining the someone to whom it mattered that the sentence was his, even if—especially if—no one, including the machine, can be made to care.
