Someone was bound to ask whether this holds at the smaller steps, so I checked, and it does not. That is the part worth knowing before you size up.
Same method, each listing against itself, at today's read.
Eighth to quarter: 284 listings sell both, and 39 of them are dearer per gram at the quarter. Typical saving 9 percent, worst case about 8 percent against you.
Quarter to half: 319 sell both, 9 are dearer at the half.
Half to ounce: 318 sell both, 8 are dearer at the ounce.
Eighth to ounce: 261 sell both, and none are dearer. Still no exceptions.
So the full jump always pays, but a single step up does not. Roughly one listing in seven will charge you more per gram for a quarter than it charges for an eighth. If you are stepping up one size, it is worth the ten seconds. If you are going the whole way from an eighth to an ounce, you do not need to check.
