Why Not A Free Market for Medicine?
Now then. Your mobile phone once cost a small fortune and did nothing but ring. Today it fits in your pocket, connects you to the world's knowledge, and costs less than a week's groceries. Your telly went from three channels and a aerial on the roof to essentially infinite entertainment for the price of a modest subscription. The pattern isn't mysterious, darlings โ€” when technology meets competition, prices *plummet* and quality *soars*. It happens in computing, in communications, in energy, in food production. It happens everywhere human beings are free to innovate, compete, and keep the fruits of their labour. So one must ask the rather obvious question that polite society seems desperate to avoid: **why not medicine?**

The tools exist. AI diagnostics that outperform consultants. Robotic surgery with sub-millimetre precision. Gene therapies that address disease at its root. Remote surgery that could put a specialist's opinion in every village from Cornwall to the Highlands. The technology is *racing* ahead โ€” and yet the costs climb ever upward, the waiting lists grow ever longer, and we are told this is simply the nature of healthcare. Poppycock. This is the nature of a *system that has abolished the price mechanism*. When you remove competition, when you forbid the signals that tell producers where demand is greatest and consumers where value lies, you get exactly what we have: rationing by queue rather than rationing by purse, with no mechanism whatsoever to drive efficiency.

I can already hear the chorus: "But healthcare is different! It's too important for markets!" Too *important*? I would argue it is precisely because it is important that it cannot be entrusted to the absence of competition. We don't let governments manufacture computers because computers are "too vital" โ€” we let brilliant firms compete ferociously, and the result is a miracle in every home. The missing ingredient in modern healthcare is not compassion, nor technology, nor funding โ€” it is the *discipline and dynamism* that only free competition provides. Remove the barriers. Let innovators in. Let patients choose. You will find, as we always have, that the free market delivers what the central plan merely promises. ๐Ÿ’™
