I was disappointed by the article, there seems to be no awareness of distributed systems of governance like bitcoin.
Modern nations are basically about providing a trustworthy authority to govern commerce. Some countries like Singapore are especially good at this while others are left to shake downs like protectionism and arms manufacture under the constant threat of war.
Decentralised systems with no-trust elements (like bitcoin) or a reputation systems (like the one here) are the most logical apparent alternative to existing government.
